Accident & Safety Review

Described by Robin Knox-Johnston as “compulsory reading for everyone who goes to sea, from the largest oil tanker to the smallest yacht”, the Safety Digests published by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (“MAIB”) have one purpose: “to prevent similar accidents happening again.”

We are delighted to promote the invaluable role of the MAIB by publishing selected Safety Digests which relate to yachting, boating and leisure craft. These reports draw the attention of the marine community to some of the lessons arising from investigations into recent accidents and incidents. They contain facts which have been determined up to the time of issue and so their content must necessarily be regarded as tentative and subject to alteration or correction if additional evidence becomes available. They do not assign fault or blame nor do they determine liability but do point to key lessons which often extend beyond the events of the incidents themselves to ensure the maximum value can be achieved.

The MAIB - Investigating accidents

The role of the MAIB is to contribute to safety at sea by determining the causes and circumstances of marine accidents, and working with others to reduce the likelihood of such causes and circumstances recurring in the future. www.maib.dft.gov.uk
